A stay in ‘Marina Vista’ will enable you to take in the many delights of Weymouth and Dorset
Weymouth has been a popular seaside destination for over 200 years, when George III spent time there, taking in the sea air and bathing in the sea water. The fine Georgian seafront still remains an elegant background to the glorious sweep of the bay with its’ golden sands and safe, shallow waters.
The sheltered nature of Weymouth Bay and its Southerly position often means that Weymouth is blessed with sunshine when other areas close by aren’t as lucky.
Weymouth continues to be a fantastic place to take a holiday, offering traditional delights such as donkey rides, a fun fair and Punch and Judy in the summer season. A wealth of interesting shops are to be found down the narrow streets with bow fronted houses offering a wide variety of goods. From souvenirs to designer clothing and places to eat, including of course, some wonderful Fish and Chip shops! There is also a modern shopping area with many well known high street names and a multiplex cinema.
A walk around the Old Harbour and New Marina will bring you face to face with traditional fishing boats. Also look out for the Town Bridge opening to let large yachts travel through. The Condor Ferry makes day trips to the Channel Islands from Weymouth. There is a wide variety of restaurants in the area. Whilst around the harbour why not visit Brewer’s Quay and the Timewalk Historical experience?
The Napoleonic defenses of Nothe Fort and Gardens is a fascinating museum and outstanding vantage point of Weymouth Bay, The Isle of Portland and the old Naval Dock of Portland Harbour, to be the home of the sailing events for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Throughout the town and around the harbour you can find a wide variety of public houses, ranging from cocktail bars and night clubs to quiet traditional inns. The Boot Inn, yards away from ‘Marina Vista’ is the oldest pub in Weymouth and has been voted CAMRA Pub of the Year.
At the other end of the town, Greenhill Gardens are alive with colourful flowers and are illuminated at night. Here you will also find a putting green, tennis and bowls. Nearby Lodmoor park is where you will find The Sea Life Centre, Pirate Adventure Golf (great fun!) and more children’s rides.
Within easy walking distance of the Town Centre lies the RSPB nature reserve of Radipole Lake, with a visitor centre equipped with telescopes to observe the different types of birds on the Lake and interesting walks.
Visit the Isle of Portland, connected to the main land by the amazing geological feature of Chesil Beach, which can be viewed from Portland Heights. Travel southwards to the lighthouse at Portland Bill, to take in the dramatic scenery around Pulpit Rock and climb to the top of the lighthouse for spectacular views of the coast.
Local author Thomas Hardy wrote about Weymouth as ‘Budmouth’ and the beautiful surrounding countryside is captured in his novels. A trip into ‘Hardy Country’ today will take you along secluded roads, past thatched cottages and streams. It can sometimes appear as if time has stood still.
